Digital learning has gained plenty of traction in recent years. The 21st century is clearly characterised by an explosive increase in various e-education tools and programs. Google Classroom, Zoom, Pear Deck, Blackboard, Canva, and Edpuzzle provide numerous possibilities to get your student’s attention and promote effective learning.
Digital learning gives students easy access to information and control over time, objectives, place and pace of development and growth. It changes our approach to education and training.
However, despite the obvious fact that digital learning has been warmly and graciously welcomed by the world, there is still a long way to go.
Teaching has undergone a profound change in order to successfully adapt from the traditional forms of classroom teaching to teaching online. The students are successfully using large LCD screens, projectors, and laptops, which is far beyond the conventional methods. It seems that the times of blackboards and white chalks are gone.
But new opportunities and developments bring new problems. Teachers have to invest a great deal of time to learn how to make full use of new digital inventions. They might get easily overwhelmed by the amount of information, which can cause confusion in classes and diminish the learning experience. Lack of communication, self-discipline, missing interaction and common failure of devices can cause many problems.
As a part of the Erasmus+ project Fit4DigiLinE, an amazing Learning/Teaching/Training Activity was organised in Foligno, Italy, on 03. – 05. May 2022, with the aim to help teachers efficiently use multiple technological applications, brainstorm the advantages of digital language teaching to teachers, rank them according to their perceived importance and test the created materials to adapt them better to teachers´ needs. Participants worked in small multinational groups, each containing one representative from every partner country (Italy, Austria, Finland, Spain and Greece).
The main topics included in this event were:
Importance of team-building activities.
Digital language teaching – common definition, opportunities and challenges.
The Fit4DigiLine project and results.
Additional feedback and suggestions on the developed Learning Units.
Planning, implementation and quality improvement.
The most useful digital tools.
Dealing with learners when teaching online.
Self-care in the digital setting.
Useful tips for solving digital problems.
Digital competence assessment: challenges, opportunities and possibilities.
Team-building activities performed during training sessions brought about transformative change. Games, quizzes, and time-bound challenges allowed participants to build instant rapport and reduce the need for lengthy and time-consuming discussions. All participants communicated efficiently and honestly, giving constructive feedback on prepared materials and presentations of their colleagues.
Within the first activity, the participants were asked to mingle with others and answer as many personal questions as possible in a minute. This way we learnt a lot about each other and avoided boring introductions. There was no time for hesitation or awkward silence.
The working place was a hive of activity when the participants were asked to leave relevant feedback on the prepared units. Jamboard, which is a smart display that allows you to pull in images, leave comments and use easy-to-read handwriting, boosted collaboration and engagement. This digital tool helped us sketch ideas and save them for future purposes. This way, the presenters encouraged effective participation and prevented us from losing valuable comments and remarks. All corrections made during these sessions will be used later to improve the quality of prepared materials.
Bearing in mind the interests of their guests, the event organiser “Engina” provided a vibrant cultural program.
On the last day of our training, we visited Assisi, which is generally regarded as the birthplace of the Latin poet Propertius and of St. Francis.
The participants were given free time to explore the city on their own, while project partners shooted engaging videos walking past stunning scenery.
Undoubtedly, the most important tourist attraction of Umbria is The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, which is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order. The Upper and Lower Churches are decorated with frescoes by numerous late medieval painters from the Roman and Tuscan schools. The range and quality of the works give the basilica a unique importance in demonstrating the outstanding development of Italian art of this period.
Visiting this marvellous medieval city, we constantly felt the presence of the great saint, who travelled fearlessly into Muslim territory to visit the Sultan al-Kamil. Wishing to demonstrate his great faith in the Christian religion, he challenged Sultan to a “trial-by-fire” in which he and a Muslim would step into a fire, with the idea that the follower of the true religion would be spared by God.
In addition, we were also given a chance to taste excellent local wines and specialities, market visits and wander around narrow streets in Foligno.
The main outcomes of the training event were testing and evaluation of the project units, collection of corrective notes and suggestions, and promotion of fundamental values, such as trust, transparency and a team spirit.
